HELLO - Starting my MAPP Journey with MDX

Hello!

My name is Jovita Bautista and I am originally from Malaysia but currently residing in Singapore.

I started my dance journey at a humble neighborhood dance school in Kuala Lumpur at a tender age of 3. Trained intensively in both Ballet and Ballroom Latin Dancing, I later ventured into different forms of dance such as Contemporary, Hip Hop, Tap, Flamenco, Malay and Chinese Cultural Dance.

My dance journey started as a Ballet dancer. With the completion of my Royal Academy of Dance Examinations from Pre-Primary till Advance 2 I later proceed into a Professional Dancers training program but did not manage to complete it due to my commitment to my BA. I have been an active Ballroom Latin competitor since the age of 14 years competing from the Beginner category up to Professional in both local (Malaysia and Singapore) and International competitions.

Upon graduating from my BA (Hons) in Psychology, I took a leap of faith, postponing my life goal of further studies in a MA program abroad to moved to Singapore in pursue of a career as a Professional Ballroom Latin Dancer. Since then I have been winning more than 100 awards accumulated over the course of my 14 years journey. 2 of which I am most proud of being award Singapore's Top Ballroom Latin Dancer by the Singapore Ballroom Dance Teachers Association (SBDTA) and ranked Top 12 by the Asian Dance Council (ADC) in 2014/2015.

Upon Semi-retiring from the competition scene, I have been focusing most of my time teaching competition class; training aspiring dancers for dance competitions in both Ballet and Ballroom Latin Dancing and as well as leisure classes and choreographing for University and Dance School's Productions and Concerts.

While the pandemic has halted all worldwide competitions, stuck a Circuit Breaker (Home Quarantine) for close to 3 months is what pushed me to finally use the time to do the things I have always wanted to do, take up more dance classes and other leisure and fun activity classes; the MAPP course is one of them.

Now seems about the best time for me to began my MAPP journey, reviewing and reflecting on my Professional Practice, challenging myself into further self improvement in expressing my thoughts. To add on, the bonus of the course is that it is distant learning, which works out perfectly!

I am lost and confused but also super excited to start this new journey of learning and meeting people who shares the same! <3

Till my next post...

Induction Skype call with Adesola & Helen

Induction Skype call with Adesola & Helen

Worried, don't know what to expect and so many questions that needed answers.
I made sure I read the Handbook in advance so I could ask the right questions and know what was going on before my first Skype call with my program supervisors on the 11th Sept (Friday) 5pm (12th Sept 12am Singapore time)

The call took exactly an hour.

Not knowing what to expect, I was all ears listening, making sure that I do not miss any information.
I was relieved to know that It was a call that Adesola and Helen gave us a general introduction into the course and explained how the course was being run.
Nervous coming from an Asian culture where you mostly listen and learn and would rarely dare to speak up, I was excited to know that this course encourages learning through our professional practice and that we learn through discussion with others.

Relieved also to find many people on the same boat; equally as confused. But Grateful for Module 2 and 3 students that are so willing to lift a hand to help and encourage us (in Module 1) by sharing tips on their journey through their MA studies.

Finally, a good night sleep and excited to start the program on MONDAY!

Good Night all! <3
